2017 Northern Classic Results

231 Fusion Fastpitch Sweeps 12U and 14U Titles!!  Elite 10U Takes Home Top Honors!! Jenison Wildcat Pride Close to Perfect in 16U Title Run!

What a great two days of softball!  Problem is, the Northern Classic was scheduled for three days of play.

Underscoring the importance of pool play, four teams emerged from Friday and Saturday play with perfect 3-and-0 records before Mother Nature ushered in Father's Day with a tournament-squashing torrential downpour.  At least it wasn't a dust storm.

In the 10U division, the Elite 10U girls out of Jenison stormed through pool play to capture their first Northern Classic title.  Jason Hamilton's TC Thunder 10U squad made another strong tournament run and took home second-place medals for their efforts.  Great job, ladies!

In the 12U division, Juli Tiesworth's 231 Fusion Fastpitch squad and Brent Simcox's Hudsonville Havoc team rang up 3-and-0 records, but by virtue of the fewest runs allowed, 231 Fusion took home the team title and home plate trophy.  It was the first tournament title for the rapidly-improving Fusion team.  For Simcox's Havoc squad, it was their third top-two finish in three years in Traverse City!

Not to be outdone, the 231 Fusion Fastpitch entry in the 14U division made it two tournament titles in two weeks by rampaging through their pool play schedule early in the tournament.  Steve Steimel's girls were dominant in winning the Northern Classic title the week after earning top honors in the Spring Splash, also in Traverse City.  The Mt. Pleasant Drillers Orange team played great softball on Friday and Saturday, and took home runner-up medals in the process.

In the 16U division, Rob Bobeldyk's Jenison Wildcat Pride used great defense and excellent pitching to earn their first Northern Classic title.  The Pride gave up only one run in three pool play games.  Mickey D's, a colorful and fun-to-watch team out of Michigan's thumb area, captured second place in the senior group.

Thank you to all of the families that made the trip to Traverse City for the weekend.  It was great to meet so many nice people--we hope you enjoyed your stay in northern Michigan!

2016 Northern Classic Results

It's Havoc Times Two!! Ogemaw Lays Down The Law In 14U!!  TC Thunder Capture 16U Title!!

Well, THAT was a hot weekend!  The weather was a bit warm, too, but the play on the diamond was sizzling in the 2016 version of the Northern Classic.

The Hudsonville Havoc organization returned to Traverse City and conquered opponents in the 10U and 12U divisions to capture Northern Classic crowns.  When I checked, I was surprised to learn that Brent Simcox's 10U team and Tim Weber's 12U squad earned their first Traverse City tournament titles.  The Havoc ALWAYS seem to make a deep tournament run, but this year the Hudsonville-based teams finished the task at hand and took home the Home Plate Trophy in their respective divisions.

In the 10U group, the Havoc proved to be too much as they defeated the Gaylord-based Sandlot Slammers.  Both teams were very-well coached.  The heavy-hitting Havoc team, led by Mabrae Simcox's SECOND over-the-fence home run as a 10U player (she hit one last year, too!) won the title game, 12-2.

At 12U, Tim Weber's team polished off the Mt. Pleasant Drillers Blue team, 9-0, in the championship game.  All four finalists in the 12U division--TC Thunder 11U, Moran Iron Works Vulcans, Drillers Blue and the Havoc--played high-level softball all weekend and proved to be the cream of the 12U teams.

In the 14U group, the Ogemaw Outlaws and Mt. Pleasant Drillers Blue squads made long playoff runs on Sunday that culminated in a thrilling championship game.  The Outlaws jumped out to a sizeable lead and then held on to win the Northern Classic 14U title, 5-4.  The title game was a fantastic matchup--great play by both teams!

In the Senior Division, the Traverse City Thunder 16U team used solid pitching and lockdown defense to edge Great Lakes United, 3-1, in the championship game.  Coach Rick Troy's United team moved up one week after winning the Cherry Capital Showdown championship last year, and despite returning to ANOTHER championship game, were unable to get past Jeff Musser's Thunder squad.  The 16U Northern Classic field was one of the strongest in recent memory, top to bottom.  Way to go, ladies!

THANK YOU to all of the families that visited Traverse City over the weekend.  We hope you had fun, and we hope you found some water--Lake Michigan?  Great Wolf Lodge?  A local hotel pool?--to jump into while you were here!  It was HOT!!!

2015 Northern Classic Results

Heat Repeat!!!  Morgan's Fastpitch, Mid-Michigan Lightning Blue Out-Duel the Havoc in 14U and 12U!!!  It's Chicken Dinner for Winners Ogemaw Outlaws At 10U!!!

Beautiful northern Michigan weather provided the backdrop for weekend-long action in the 2015 Northern Classic, and what a weekend of softball it was!

A growing field of 10U teams put on an impressive display of softball, with skills beyond their years being flashed all over the fields.  When the dust settled on Sunday, the Ogemaw Outlaws posted their first Northern Classic tournament victory as an organization by doubling up the Livingston Breeze, 6-3.  It was the Breeze's second straight trip to the finals at 10U, and Coach Brad Hoyes' team showed they were deserving of earning their second straight medal in Traverse City.  The Outlaws, on the strength of some top-notch pitching, captured the Home Plate Trophy.  Way to go, girls!

In 12U, the Mid-Michigan Lightning Blue team shutout their younger softball buddies, the Lightning Orange 11U team, in the semifinals.  Then, matched up against another sensational 11U team--the Hudsonville Havoc--Head Coach Chris Kokaly's  Lightning Blue pitched ANOTHER shutout, 1-0, while winning that organization's first NC title.  Pitching and defense was the meal ticket for the Lightning all weekend.  With the strength of the Lightning and Havoc's 11U teams on display, could there be another Lightning-Havoc matchup in the finals again next year?

In 14U, Coach Bill Siersma brought a new team--Morgan's Fastpitch--back to Traverse City, and as usual, success followed.  Morgan's and Grand Rapids-area neighbor Hudsonville Havoc battled to the end, but in an extremely well played game Morgan's came out on top, 1-0.  Congratulations, ladies!

In 16U, it was a Heat Repeat as the Mid-Michigan Heat squad rampaged past the Thundercats White, 13-1.  The Heat was perfect in Pool B throughout the weekend, and proved to be the class of the 16U field overall.  For the Thundercats, 2015 marked a return to the finals for the first-class Alpena organization, their first appearance since 2012.

Thank you to all of the teams that made the trip to Traverse City for the weekend.  Best wishes for continued success on the softball field this summer!

2014 Northern Classic
Wow, what a sensational finish to a frantic two days of softball in Traverse City!  The Northern Classic, beset by a Friday monsoon, picked up steam on Saturday and Sunday, and when the dust settled, it was the Batbusters coming out on top in 10U, and the Mid-Michigan Heat making a Triple Play of the 12U, 14U and 16U divisions.

The Batbusters and Livingston Breeze headlined a solid field of teams in the 10U division.  Both teams played extremely well in reaching the finals on Sunday, but in the end the Batbusters powerful offense and excellent pitching proved to be the formula for winning as they got by the Breeze, 10-2.  Congratulations, ladies!!!

From that point on, the Mid-Michigan Heat came, saw, and conquered.  Never before has an organization captured three divisions in a Northern Classic tournament, but the Heat did it on Sunday.  In the 12U group, the Heat met the TC Cherry Bombs in a rematch of the Charlevoix tournament finale the week before, won by the Cherry Bombs.  In the Northern Classic final, The powerful Cherry Bombs team held a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning when the Heat erupted for three runs that, three outs later, proved to be enough for the win.  Two great teams, and a great 12U division finish....

In the 14U division, the Heat wore down a game TC Thunder Red squad, winning the finale by a 6-1 margin.  Mid-Michigan's Heat used solid pitching to go along with a steady offense that tacked on run after run to win the 14U divsion for the first time in Northern Classic history.

Likewise, the 16U title was the first Northern Classic title for the Heat.  The Heat's senior squad shut down Brown's by a 7-0 score in the last game of Sunday's schedule to make it a trifecta for the Midland-based organization.

Congratulations to the Mid-MIchigan Heat teams and the Batbusters for earning 2014 Northern Classic titles, and to all teams for their solid play.  Thank you to all of the parents, grandparents, family and friends who showed patience with Friday's weather, and who turned out to cheer on their favorite players throughout the weekend.
