12U Waves Team Captures Softball Spectacular Championship!!
Resilient Crew Goes Unbeaten In Tourney, Flexes Muscle To Overcome 5th Inning Deficit In Title Contest!!!

July 8, 2018 - Two years ago, they won a single game all summer.  One game.  All summer.

This weekend, the 12U Traverse City Waves team, with largely the same personnel as that one-win team, stunned maybe everyone but themselves by capturing the 2018 Softball Spectacular tournament title with a thrilling 9-7 victory over an excellent Edge Fastpitch squad.

The Waves have been improving.  They have been working hard throughout the winter, spring and into this summer season.  You could see the improvement as evidenced by  their results so far this summer.  But on Sunday, the combination of excellent pitching by Allee Shepherd, Kate Gaylord and Maggie Napont, great defense by Izzy Covert, Sophie Hardy and friends, and just plain pure muscle propelled the Waves 12U team to a tournament victory.

Down 3-2 early in the game, Hardy clubbed her first ever over-the-fence home run to deep left field.  The two-run shot gave the Waves the lead which eventually grew to 6-3.  The Edge Fastpitch team--no strangers to tournament championship games, as evidenced by their sterling record this summer--chipped away and finally eeked out a lead, 7-6, in the top of the fifth inning.

Then the fireworks began.  In the bottom of that frame, lead-off hitter Abby Lindstrom belted the first pitch she saw over the left field fence to knot the contest at 7-7.  Rylea Beamish, an All-Tournament Team selection, came to the plate next and sent the sizable Waves following into a frenzy with a canon shot of her own that cleared the fence in almost the same spot.  Traverse City proceeded to add an insurance run, then Gaylord came on in relief to slam the door in the sixth and ignite the Waves' tournament title celebration.

Visit the Softball Spectacular tournament page for more photos, a tournament recap, and to view the All-Tournament Team.

2018 Bayside Bash Recap

Outlaws Prevail In 12U!!!  Express Records First-Ever TC Title!!!  Flyovers, Hot Temps Highlight Inaugural Bayside Bash Tourney!!!

Heat! Planes! Outlaws! Express!  The inaugural Bayside Bash tournament had it all on a super-busy Cherry Festival weekend in Traverse City.  Temperatures in the mid to upper 90's tested the mettle of players and the hardiness of fans all weekend, but several teams cooled down by going for a dip in Grand Traverse Bay or, in many cases, in the pools of the Great Wolf Lodge.  During the weekend, teams were treated to flyovers by the Navy's Blue Angels squadron along with many other featured aircraft, a treat that added a whole new level of excitement (and distraction!) to the tournament games.

On the field, more long-ball action happened in the 12U division for the second week in a row. This time, it was the hometown TC Waves showing off their muscle.  Waves players Hannah Grahn and Brooke Smith belted home runs in their pool game against the eventual champion Michigan Outlaws.  It was the first over-the-fence blast for both players.  The Waves went on to lose a tight 4-3 game to the hometown 231 Fusion Fastpitch team in the tournament semi-finals.  In the title game, Mike Fadie's Outlaws squad overpowered the Fusion, 5-0, to take the tournament title.  For Mike Garver's Fusion team, it was another strong showing and a well-played tourney finale.  Congratulations to all of the 12U teams!

In the 14U group, Ben Lundquist's Cadillac Express went unbeaten throughout the tourney to take home the home plate trophy and first place medals.  The Express squad, which has improved dramatically since last season, edged a game Lady Crusader's team 10-6 in the championship game.

Thank you to the lineup of teams and their fans that made the weekend in Traverse City a fun one!

Here's What Happens In Traverse City Between Tournament Games

A 16U player strolling down the sidewalk prior to her game in Traverse City is accosted by a gigantic squawking parrot!!! The parrot was kind enough to pose for pictures before squawking once more at the player, making sure she knew who was boss inside of this particular fence.

Waves History

The Waves is an organization formed in 2004 and based in Traverse City, and provides the opportunity for young players to learn and enjoy the game of softball. Former Waves players have had successful high school sports and academic careers...played softball in college...won national championships in rowing...earned all-area, all-region, and all-state honors in softball and other sports...made successful transitions into college, graduated from college, established professional careers...and more!  The Waves organization has funded over $11,000 in college scholarships and continues to emphasize providing opportunities for girls to excel athletically and academically while having fun playing softball.

The Waves hosted the twelfth Traverse City Softball Spectacular in 2017
.  Because of overwhelmingly positive feedback from our visiting teams, we added the Northern Classic tournament in 2008 to allow more teams the opportunity to combine a mini-vacation in the Traverse City area with a first class, enjoyable tournament.  The Cherry Capital Showdown was added to the tournament schedule a few years ago and has quickly become a favorite among teams from throughout the state.  In 2016, the Spring Splash was added to the series, an early-season tournament for younger teams.  The Bayside Bash offers a chance to experience the National Cherry Festival along with playing in a fun, quality tournament.  Finally, 2016 also saw the start of the Futures Challenge, a low-key one day tune-up tournament  for teams that have just selected their squads for next summer season.  Please send a note if you're interested in bringing your team to Traverse City.
