Waves Award Scholarships to Four Area High School Seniors

The Traverse City Waves are happy to announce that four local softball players were awarded $500 college scholarships that were available to graduating seniors who play softball for a Grand Traverse County high school.  The Barb Beckett Scholarship, the Billie Drake Scholarship, and the Waves Scholarships are designed to promote academic excellence, community service and participation in varsity softball through the 12th grade in a Grand Traverse County high school.

There were MANY excellent, well-qualified applicants for the scholarships, which made Billie and Barb's decision very difficult.  Here are the 2017 scholarship winners:

Maddy Gabel (Kingsley) - Billie Drake Scholarship
Jessie Smith (St. Francis) - Barb Beckett Scholarship
Lexi Schoonover (TC Central) - Waves Scholarship
Sheyenne Nagy (Grand Traverse Academy) - Waves Scholarship

The Traverse City Waves have funded over $9,000 in college scholarships in the past six years.  Congratulations to ALL of the 2017 applicants for your dedication to excellence.

2017 Futures Challenge

A Glimpse Into The Future...

With all but a few days of summer behind us, the 2018 Futures Challenge gave coaches, players and fans a preview of what's in store for the 2018 softball season.  If the performance of the young teams that filled out the FC lineup is any indication, the future is bright!

Teams from around Traverse City and as far away as Sault Ste. Marie, Alpena, Detroit, Reed City, Petoskey, Onaway and Big Rapids came together for a fun, one-day tournament that served as a jump start to the offseason.  There was lots of spirited play, some outstanding defense, a bit of timely hitting here and there, and most of all a chance for newly selected teams to compete on the diamond for the first time.

In the 10U division, the Michigan Expos picked up where they left off by capturing the title game, 8-3, against the Alpena Thundercats.  In 12U, it was 231 Fusion Fastpitch who edged out their Thundercats counterparts, 10-8, for the tournament title.  And in the 14U division, the 231 Fusion Fastpitch girls were the cream of the crop, earning a 7-2 title game victory over the TC Thunder.

THANK YOU to all of the parents, players and fans who made the tournament a success!  Best of luck to all of the girls as they get to work in the offseason!

Here's What Happens In Traverse City In-Between Tournament Games

A 16U player strolling down the sidewalk prior to her game in Traverse City is accosted by a gigantic squawking parrot!!! The parrot was kind enough to pose for pictures before squawking once more at the player, making sure she knew who was boss inside of this particular fence.

Waves History

The Waves is an organization formed in 2004 and based in Traverse City, and provides the opportunity for young players to learn and enjoy the game of softball. Former Waves players have had successful high school sports and academic careers...played softball in college...won national championships in rowing...earned all-area, all-region, and all-state honors in softball and other sports...made successful transitions into college, graduated from college, established professional careers...and more!  The Waves organization has funded over $9000 in college scholarships and continues to emphasize providing opportunities for girls to excel athletically and academically while having fun playing softball.

The Waves hosted the twelfth Traverse City Softball Spectacular in 2017
.  Because of overwhelmingly positive feedback from our visiting teams, we added the Northern Classic tournament in 2008 to allow more teams the opportunity to combine a mini-vacation in the Traverse City area with a first class, enjoyable tournament.  The Cherry Capital Showdown was added to the tournament schedule a few years ago and has quickly become a favorite among teams from throughout the state.  In 2016, the Spring Splash was added to the series, an early-season tournament for younger teams.  Finally, the 2016 also saw the start of the Futures Challenge, a low-key one day tune-up tournament  for teams that have just selected their squads for next summer season.  Please send a note if you're interested in bringing your team to Traverse City.
